The Campo del Cielo refers to a group of meteorites that were found about 1,000 km northwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The impact is estimated at 4,000-5,000 years ago.However, the history goes back much further than that in space. These meteorites originate from the molten iron core of what was briefly a planet between Mars and Jupiter, about 4.5 billion years ago. This planet broke apart during the birth of the solar system, and its remnants comprise the asteroid belt. Scientists have determined that the radiocarbon dating of this meteorite corresponds with an ancient Native American lore. When the Spanish conquerors found Campo del Cielo in 1576, they thought they had come across silver ore, but the aborigines told them that it came from the sky.
